Sundays have been the hardest days for me during this pandemic because Sundays are what the Gyspy Cafe was all about. It was the day when all of our out of town friends and guests joined our local families on Main Street Sebastopol for Chicken and Waffles, Salmon Cake Benedicts or Biscuits and Gravy. Oh how I miss the smell of coffee and the laughter and conversations that filled the air. Out of town guests made new friends at the counter or in line waiting to get a table. There was love in the air despite the wait and my cooks Gabe, Julio, Patrick, William and Martin would do their incredible magic to feed twice the amount of people that filled the cafe during the week. In the front of the house my wonderful Angel served hundreds of plates while Santiago bussed tables like a pro soccer player circling the field. Doris, Rob and Meriku took orders, soothed souls, and caught up on local news while keeping everyone in the loop for their yummy breakfast. And every weekend I got to conduct this wonderful chaos by giving hugs and telling the story of my mother the gypsy orphan who inspired my wonderful cafe. Its been hard work but total bliss to a woman who loves creating environments that try to inspire happiness. Its been my pride and joy for the last 9 years to offer healthy delicious sustainable food to our community and to support 11 families with fair wages and jobs they were happy to come to. Especially Mothers Day, Gypsy’s most popular day of the year when we would hand out chocolate covered strawberries from Hwy 12 to waiting families who brought their mom out for breakfast. We would get to hug hundreds of regulars and see the smiling faces of our wonderful community
As most of you know The Gypsy Cafe is all about our sweet gypsy family. In my nine years of business I have watched my staff evolve like kids of my own. Some have gone to college, completed yoga and nursing training, several have had beautiful children and some travelled for the first time in their lives. It’s not unusual to be hugged or called by name in our sweet little town cafe. I have been blessed running this cafe and being supported and elevated by my incredible hard working staff and kind local customer base.
Since having to close the doors to help stop the spread of the corona virus many of my staff have found it very difficult to make ends meet. As we wait for the go ahead to reopen I feel the need to ask for your help. The confusion with emergency funding has already shown that people are falling through the cracks. My incredibly hard working loyal staff, who are the backbone of the Gypsy Cafe have already been impacted. Helping each other is what our community is all about. Your support at this time would mean everything to my team. Please see our Gypsy Family Go Fund Me.
As always we are grateful for the love and support our community allows us. And we miss you all so very much especially the smiles, the heartfelt stories and pictures we shared daily. And as we wait to see what unfolds, let us know if there is anything we can do for you as well.
Thanks so much shawn and rob
